Naprapathy vs Chiropractic: The Basics
By Dr. Daniel Rocha DN LMT CPT CNS
Chiropractic, founded by DD Palmer, is a field that focuses on musculoskeletal mechanics alleviating pain in patients with back and neck issues. They do so by a sudden controlled alignment that will increase the range of motion of the spine or designated joint. Cranial manipulation realigns the bones of the skull, alleviating pinched nerves that can cause headaches and other issues.
Now Naprapathic medicine was founded by Oakley Smith, a DD Palmer student. Because of his age and health condition, Oakley chose to go to medical school after he achieved his chiropractor practitioner diploma. Because Oakley was so frail, he wanted to discover a means to do what chiropractic does without the high-velocity thrust.
Oakley discovered that it’s connective tissue that can be manipulated, which are your ligaments, tendons, and fascia. The most important is fascia which should slide and glide. It can get very bound and tight through repetitive movements, poor posture, and dehydration. So the goal of naprapathic is to stretch and manipulate this fascia and create movement once again reducing friction.
A normal treatment in naprapathic is about 30-45min and works on a full body, toe to head, to bring the body into full realignment. This truly can leave a patient feeling much better and pain-free. Add a good nutritional plan to continue their recovery.
So the similarities are obvious as they share the same base or foundation, but Oakley believed all things must work together for the body to find homeostasis. This homeostasis allows the body to heal and recover on its own. Please comment below or send me a DM with your questions.
